The Scene – Gravity Works at McFadden’s

Gravity Works

Gravity Works

Tuesday August 11th, after much self persuasion I made my way down to McFadden’s to catch, at least, Gravity Works first set of their headlining night at McFadden’s. Located at 52 Pine Street in Providence, Mcfadden’s has a long history as a chain sports bar and Irish pub, but is relatively new to hosting live music. With the rash of live music club closings (The Call, The Centry Lounge, The Livingroom just to name a few that come to mind) over the past few years, many bars and clubs have been shifting paradigms to accommodate the incredible local music scene. While I applaud Mcfadden’s efforts to host live music, it remains of of my least favorite places to see a show. Despite the lack of proper house PA system, and stage for that matter Gravity Works took to the floor with Zack Fenner on guitar and vocals, Nate Beauvais on bass guitar and vocals, Paul Silvia on percussion and vocals, Maro Leclerc on Keys and Joe Jannerelli on drums, and rocked the house:

The Scene – To The Oceanmist for the Amber Bettez Benefit

Friday July 31st after working a bit late I gathered my show going kit (i.e. manpurse stuffed with fliers for my blog, a notepad, pen, camera, spare batteries, and spare flash card) I hopped in my car and took the hour journey south to the Matunuck area of South Kingston and The Oceanmist. In addition to the normal motivation of five great music acts, it was for a great cause. Amber Bettez, lead singer of The Law and owner/designer of Silver Tides Jewelry was diagnosed with a brain tumor, after some dangerous and costly surgery she is in the clear and recovering. Being a self employed artist and musician, she’s without health insurance, an all too common problem in our United States these days, and is left with a medical bill only surpassed by my student loan debt. Gathering friends and bands, Low B organized the show to help Amber and her family foot the bill. The lineup consisted of Johnny Ronci, Humblebee, Broken Ground, Nevermind: A Nirvana Tribute, and The LawContinue reading

Tunes Around Town – Legends Playing Locally at the MGM Grand Theater

Weekly I try to pick up a Providence Phoenix during my jaunts about town, always a good read and a great resource on local music. Aside from the great interview by Chris Conti of Monty Are I‘s Stephen Aiello highlighting their first major label release, last night’s epic CD Release party and their upcoming tour, I was taken aback by the advertisement for Foxwood‘s MGM Grand Theater (Warning: Inline Browser Sound), and the legends they had coming to Connecticut soon.  Continue reading

The Scene – Innocent Uprising at Club Hell

Kyle and Sean Nicholas of Innocent Uprisng

Kyle and Sean Nicholas

Thursday July 30th I gathered myself after work and headed down solo to Club Hell on Richmond Street in Providence to catch Innocent Uprising.  It had been a while since I’d had the chance to see them play out and knew ahead of time that it was Zig-Zag’s last performance as drummer for the reggae rock quintet.  Arriving downtown early with the intention of grabbing a quick dinner before the show, I was nearly heartbroken when I saw Giovanni’s Pizza was closed for renovations (it has since reopened, to much of my jubilation).   Sean Nicholas (vocals), Travis McVey (lead guitar), Kyle Nicholas (rhythm guitar), Bobby Terrien (bass guitar) and Jay “Zig Zag” Motte (drums) took to the stage and delivered a set rife with originals and spiced with some covers:

The Scene – Love Money Day

Setting the Stage for Love Money Day

Setting the Stage

Saturday July 18th I headed over to East Providence for the 2nd Annual Love Money Day, featuring Mike Baker, Mass Elite, J.T.O., J.U.D.A. Strain, hosted by Love Money on a beautiful summer afternoon. Held on a private homestead on Silver Spring Avenue, it was a quaint setting for a relaxed back yard BBQ and concert day. I arrived early with my own six pack and chocolate stocked cooler and hung out for a while, chewing the fat with some of the hosts and guests before the music started. Continue reading

Tunes Around Town – October is in the Air Oct 1st – Oct 3rd
