The Scene – Phoenix Best Music Poll Winners at Lupo’s

Wednesday August 12th I heard last minute about an early show happening at Lupo’s from Johnny Lingo. The Rustic Overtones were scheduled to appear, utilizing three local openers, all of whom had just won an accolade in The Providence Phoenix’s annual Best Music Poll, The Johnny Lingo Band, winner of Best Male Vocalist, SEXCoffee, Breakthrough Act of the Year, and The ‘mericans, listed as the Best Music Poll Winner.  An unplanned night on the town during the work week, I made it a relatively short stay and took off before the headliner began.

CD Release Party October – Candace Brooks Band, Monty Are I, The Brew and Baylock

There are four HUGE CD release shows coming up in October around Providence. So monumental in fact, a mere mention in Tunes Around Town would not do them justice.

The Scene – July 10th at Lupo’s, Part 3: Agents, Scotty, Badfish to Tazza

Continued from Part 1 and Part 2

I made my way back to the bar as the herd made its way outside for The Agents’ set. Once I’d secured a brew I hit the merch tables as the interior of Lupo’s was practically a ghost town. Having never heard of the Agents before today, I was excited to catch their set, and came to find out they used to play out quite frequently, and with a few weddings, and child births in the band, they had taken the past few years off to let life run its course. Getting late in the night, my cameara was running out of batteries, as was I. Read the rest of this entry »

The Scene – July 10th at Lupo’s, Part 2: Senior Discount and Someday Providence

Senior Discount pumping up the crowd

Senior Discount pumping up the crowd

Continued from Part 1

Fighting back away from the bar I could hear Senior Discount well into their set, by the time I made it back outside and made my way through the crowd they were working on wrapping up what I believe to be their original song “Ataxia,” with a refrain of “I swear I’ll kill you, I swear I’ll fucking kill you” I find it hard to mistake. It was some in your face, loud punk rock, that got the audience pumped up. I made quick work of my first brew as Senior Discount began their song “Smile.” Once I had a free hand, I broke out my trusty Nikon and had a chance to clip the remainder of the song: Read the rest of this entry »

The Scene – July 10th at Lupo’s, Part 1: The Cobra-matics and Baylock

Friday was certainly a big event day for Sound Session, there were tons of shows going on throughout Providence, but I settled on the Lupo’s Block Party. Featuring seven local music acts, The Cobra-Matics, Baylock, Senior Discount, Someday Providence, The Agents, Scotty Don’t and BadFish, it was one stop with the most to see. The whole night started at 6pm, so I made a mad dash after finishing work right at 6pm to get down to Lupo’s and get ready for some tunes.

The Scene – WBRU Rockhunt Finals

Chris Parry of Baylock at Lupo's

Chris Parry of Baylock at Lupo's

April 4th I was right back to Lupo’s for the WBRU Rockhunt Finals, 4 local bands for $7 how could you go wrong.  Well the night started out with the [Viennagram:]. While anyone who has the balls to get on stage and play instruments has more musical ability than I, I will leave it at these guys were definitely not my style. My opinion was probably not helped by the fact that after their set the lead singer kept gangling by me in Gollum-esque fashion, wearing a wide striped red and white circus jacket and top hat, looking as though he’d had 3 too many tabs of acid.

Cozying up to the stage I ran into some gents from Innocent Uprising (and their crowd) out to support their boys in Baylock, great to see locals out in support of each other. As usual Baylock did a great job of showcasing their versatility from the acoustically driven “Conscience” and “Rise” to the heavier thrashing “General Store” and “Blue Amberol.” John bounced around on bass expending more energy in one set than I do in a year, Kirby pounded the skins creating a great back beat for Chris’s tight rhythm and additional percussion laid the groundwork while Tim’s blazed his precise lead. Going for the gold they played the most impressive version of “Patience” I’ve seen to date. Read the rest of this entry »

The Scene – G. Love at Lupo’s

So far it has been one crazy April!  I started the month out right with 2 shows at Lupo’s right off the bat!

Someday Providence at Lupo's

Someday Providence at Lupo's

April 3rd kicked my month off right with G. Love hitting Providence. The show opened with Rhode Island’s own Someday Providence who warmed the crowd up nicely with some of their tried and true local flavor, the whole crowd was bouncing and singing along to “Drank Too Much” and “Summertime in Rhode Island” winding down their set and handing it over to The Movement. Hailing from Philly and on tour with G. Love for quite some time, I imagine he hand selected The Movement to REPRESENT with their hard rocking, hip-hop reggae. More then once during their set I caught myself taking out my hair tie and letting the mane whip around a bit (sorry to the blonde whose drink in which it landed). I’m not really aware of The Scene Philly has to offer, but if these guys are any indication, they’ve got some good musicians who can get a crowd pumped up down there. Read the rest of this entry »
