The Scene – Innocent Uprising at Club Hell

Kyle and Sean Nicholas
Thursday July 30th I gathered myself after work and headed down solo to Club Hell on Richmond Street in Providence to catch Innocent Uprising. It had been a while since I’d had the chance to see them play out and knew ahead of time that it was Zig-Zag’s last performance as drummer for the reggae rock quintet. Arriving downtown early with the intention of grabbing a quick dinner before the show, I was nearly heartbroken when I saw Giovanni’s Pizza was closed for renovations (it has since reopened, to much of my jubilation). Sean Nicholas (vocals), Travis McVey (lead guitar), Kyle Nicholas (rhythm guitar), Bobby Terrien (bass guitar) and Jay “Zig Zag” Motte (drums) took to the stage and delivered a set rife with originals and spiced with some covers:

McFadden's in Providence
Around 9:30pm I was ready to crawl into bed and pop on a DVD when my phone rang and I answered. It was Zig Zag, he was calling to see if I was going to attending McFadden’s that night for the Innocent Uprising show about which I’d forgotten. I was throwing every “I’m old, lame and have to be up for work” type excuses then Zig Zag uttered two phrases that are like my kryptonite “But Sully, there is NO COVERCHARGE and I’LL BUY YOU A GUINNESS!” Well apparently that made up my mind, I spent about 10 minutes trying to convince Tim to come along with me, for which I recieved the “are you daft” look. I knew Tim had spent some years working across the street from McFadden’s at TEN: Steak and Sushi, so he must be able to provide me directions. Alas, he said “Sorry Bro, I’m on cruise control in Providence, don’t know how to tell you, I just know how to get there.” Damit, onto Mapquest and head to downtown. Read the rest of this entry »
The Scene – May 9th, The Box to The City Cafe to The Box
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on May 23rd, 2009
Saturday May 9th I was diligently working on the blog for most of the morning when I decided to head to Zig Zag‘s a little early, knowing Kyle Nicholas, Zig Zag’s band mate in Innocent Uprising, was playing an acoustic set at The City Cafe it wouldn’t be too difficult to twist his arm into serving as my navigator for the evening. Last time I’d seen Kyle he had said he was sharing the stage this night with Andrea Belanger, someone he KNEW I’d like and shouldn’t miss. Pulling off I-95 I noticed the marquee at The Box and was reminded Sinister Minstrel and Gravity Works were playing there this fine night as well. SCORE! I parked at Zig Zag’s place and ran down to the box to say hi to some of the guys I’d been running into so frequently, and got the skinny on when they each would be starting their sets. Change of plans, I think I can squeeze in bits of four acts tonight, time to put on the game face. When I arrived to Zig Zag’s I found Zig Zag and Kyle packing up the portable PA system and loading it into the car after which we each cracked a beer and chatted. Kyle reiterated the point that I shouldn’t miss Andrea’s set tonight, but they were going to be trading off half sets, allowing more patrons throughout the night to see each of their acts. Thank you sir for making my logistics all the easier for the night! Kyle headed out and after some prodding Zig Zag was ready to come out for the night. I told him of my ambitious plan, and got him even more excited, but we still had to wait for his friends to arrive before we took to the road. We waited for a bit and Jess arrived with another of their friends, we all grabbed another brew from the fridge in wait for Meg, who was coming over for a few shots before hitting the clubs. The Scene – April 18th, I.U. Rounding Out the Night
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on April 27th, 2009
Right off the bat it was easy to tell they’d been practicing a lot this week, their songs seemed jammier and Kyle and Travis were working phenomenally off of each other. I returned to the stage area just in time to catch “Predictable,” one of my more favorite songs of theirs they rocked it hard. Live, I.U. always plays hard and fast, pumping the crowd, I have heard some really good acoustic versions of this song as well. The set defiantly benefited from Travis’ arrival, and quick lead guitar, but Kyle was poised and ready to fill out the songs with his rhythms and strum patterns, had he been unable to attend. Between songs they would all huddle making sure all were on the same page, Sean, as usual, addressing the crowd and getting everyones feedback, while getting them pumped, and laying his steadfast reggae vocals. Bobby, having fun, was bopping around on the bass with his new transmitter, bounding into the crowd and back to the stage with his busy bass lines. Zig Zag drummed with his rocking style and gave the back-beat his furious fills while maintain the song’s purpose. Next Kyle took lead vocals on his own composition “Show a Friendly Fist:” Read the rest of this entry »
The Scene – AS220 on a Tuesday

Love Money at AS220
April 7th I headed out to Providence again, this time to AS220 on Empire street for the Love Money/Innocent Uprising show, and I’m certainly glad I dragged my ass out on a Tuesday night. While the room was sparsely populated with friends, relatives and girlfriends both bands made the best of the night playing their respective hearts out. I got there early enough to grab a burrito before the shows started and catch the extended sound check, longer than I’m used to at a smaller club but reaped the benefits as the mixing was perfect all night. Love Money laid out their classy blues jams with shout outs to the likes of Robert Johnson, changing pace a bit they played their instrumental reggae jam for some time before re-arranging some equipment and seating Lee on stage with an acoustic, they strummed out a great version of their Spanish flavored From Dusk Till Dawn.
