The Scene – The Black Rep’s Sound Session Finale

Tevellus
Saturday July 11th was the culmination of The Black Rep‘s (site has inline sound) week long genre defying music festival, The Providence Sound Session. Featuring no less than 18 musical acts on two separate stages, it was responsible for the sudden outbreak of dancing in the streets all day long. Knowing the whole shebang started at noon I tried to rouse myself as early as possible. Excited for weeks, I’d been prompting my brother Tim and m’lady Nicole to come along with me for the free day of music. Nicole was brave enough to join me for the day but Tim had yet to rouse from his slumber so I set off to Providence solo to grab her, before heading down to Westminster Street. The Scene – July 10th at Lupo’s, Part 3: Agents, Scotty, Badfish to Tazza

Continued from Part 1 and Part 2
I made my way back to the bar as the herd made its way outside for The Agents’ set. Once I’d secured a brew I hit the merch tables as the interior of Lupo’s was practically a ghost town. Having never heard of the Agents before today, I was excited to catch their set, and came to find out they used to play out quite frequently, and with a few weddings, and child births in the band, they had taken the past few years off to let life run its course. Getting late in the night, my cameara was running out of batteries, as was I. Read the rest of this entry »
The Scene – July 10th at Lupo’s, Part 2: Senior Discount and Someday Providence

Continued from Part 1
Fighting back away from the bar I could hear Senior Discount well into their set, by the time I made it back outside and made my way through the crowd they were working on wrapping up what I believe to be their original song “Ataxia,” with a refrain of “I swear I’ll kill you, I swear I’ll fucking kill you” I find it hard to mistake. It was some in your face, loud punk rock, that got the audience pumped up. I made quick work of my first brew as Senior Discount began their song “Smile.” Once I had a free hand, I broke out my trusty Nikon and had a chance to clip the remainder of the song: Read the rest of this entry »
The Scene – July 10th at Lupo’s, Part 1: The Cobra-matics and Baylock
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on August 24th, 2009
Friday was certainly a big event day for Sound Session, there were tons of shows going on throughout Providence, but I settled on the Lupo’s Block Party. Featuring seven local music acts, The Cobra-Matics, Baylock, Senior Discount, Someday Providence, The Agents, Scotty Don’t and BadFish, it was one stop with the most to see. The whole night started at 6pm, so I made a mad dash after finishing work right at 6pm to get down to Lupo’s and get ready for some tunes.

The Scene – May 7th, Sound Sessions Search, Round 14

Thursday May 7th I was right back down on Westminster again, this time at the Providence Black Repertory Company for the SEXCoffee and Fungus Amungus show. Providence Sound Sessions is a week long, genre-defying music festival hosted at various venues throughout the city, during the preceding months they hold rounds of voting in person and on line to determine the festival’s lineup for the year. This provided me a great opportunity to check out Fungus Amungus, whom I’ve heard so much about, as well as SEXCoffee, a band of whom I’d heard very little. Working a bit later than usual for the day, I was rather rushed in getting ready and heading downtown, nary a moment to eat. Once I’d secured parking and meandered my way towards the Black Rep, cigarette in hand, I realized my only dining option before my destination would be Tazza Cafe. Read the rest of this entry »
