The Scene – July 9th, 4 Corners at the Mediator
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on August 15th, 2009

Brydan Smith and Kayla Ringelheim
I had originally planned on laying low and staying in this Thursday night, but was enticed to head out once I heard the bill and realized the minute physical distance from my house of The Mediator (1.12 miles). As close and simple as the directions may have sounded, I still wound up shooting past the (unlabeled) street and circling the neighborhood for a good 20 minutes asking if people had heard of Rounds Ave before someone had a clue of what I was speaking. This month’s 4 Corners hosted by Don Tassone would feature Daniel Chase, Brydan Smith and Kayla Ringelheim. Always happy to catch a set from Daniel, I was excited to see his friend Brydan visiting from Ontario, over the previous months I’d listened to some of Brydan’s work and chatted a bit with him through myspace, and having the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with him the previous night, I was anxious to see his live performance. It also afforded me a great opportunity to enjoy Kayla’s songwriting with a bit more depth, and see be exposed to a long standing member of the Rhode Island Songwriter’s Association, Don Tassone for the first time. The format was very similar to Writers in the Round in that songwriters would play one song before handing the spotlight to the next, however 4 Corners used an intriguing gimmick in that the each round of songs had to adhere to a predetermined theme.
The Scene – July 8th, Writers in the Round, Sound Session Edition

Nicky P, Chris Rosenquest and Daniel Chase

Ana Mallozzi, Lily Costner and Kayla Riengleheim
Wednesday July 8th, I enticed Nicole to come along for the special edition of Writers in the Round at Tazza Caffe, with the promise of a delectable hamburger for dinner once we arrived. Normally occurring the first and third Wednesday of every month, they offered an additional installment this second Wednesday to coincide with the citywide Sound Session Festival. Nicole and I arrived in plenty of time to order our food and a drink before the festivities began. Chris Rosenquest was at the helm, Mcing for the night, flanked by Nicky P and Daniel Chase, noticeably absent was Kris Hansen who I later found out would no longer be able to perform at the Writers in the Round series. After introducing the night and welcoming the guests, Chris mentioned a second round of songwriters, comprised of Kayla Ringelheim, Lily Costner, and Ana Mallozzi would be playing the intermission this week, furthering the specialty of this edition of Writers in the Round. The Scene – June 4th to Snookers for the Final Drop Out Night

Big Jon and Kris with the Drop Out Night Styles
Thursday June 4th I was debating with myself whether or not I wanted to hit the town. Having only been to Snookers once before, and it being a work night I was leaning towards staying home. It then came to my attention that this was to be the final Drop Out Night at Snookers, as Providence’s best pool hall would be changing locations later this summer. I’d only recently heard of Drop Out Night, a summer Thursday night acoustic music tradition on the smoker’s deck at Snookers, though this would be the final show after a three year run. It was after 15 minutes of circling the side streets and back alleys of Providence before I recognized the area surrounding Snookers, without my brother Tim, a human GPS for Rhode Island, on hand, I had to rely on directions I’d scribbled from MapQuest. Either a combination of construction in town made the directions convoluted, or my illegible chicken scratch had fooled me into a wrong turn, regardless I was there plenty early to chat a bit with Kris Hansen and Big Jon Tierney before they began their set. The Scene – May 16th, RISA Saturday Songwriter Sessions
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on June 6th, 2009
Saturday May 16th after dropping Nicole off, I bummed around most of the day uploading media from the previous night’s show and working on the blog. Weekends I usually pack full of errands, typing, cleaning and shows as much as possible, and try to save after work for relaxation. Around 6pm I started to get ready and gave Nicole a call to twist her arm into coming to the Brooklyn Coffee Teahouse for the Saturday Songwriter Sessions. The sessions this Saturday consisted of Andrea Belanger, Daniel Chase (both of whom I’d seen recently) and Joyce Sampson (who I’d yet to hear). When Nicole and I first got together, she lived way down Douglas Ave, but neither of us had heard of the Brooklyn, and in all honesty, really wish we had during her time out there. Once we found the place, it was like a diamond in the rough the front door was locked with a sign pointing to the side entrance. Passing the wrought iron gate, Nicole and I meandered down a field stone path that traversed an outdoor garden, full of luxurious green vines and a variety of flowers to cover the spectrum of a rainbow. Park benches lined the path with some standard white PVC outdoor lounge chairs, and as we approached the door, I noticed an old time self contained porch swing, and was immediately reminded of my Grandma Jo and her summertime swing cadence by the lake with good book. The Scene – May 6th, My First Writers in the Round
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on May 13th, 2009
Wednesday the 6th I motivated myself to head down to Tazza Cafe for their twice monthly acoustic night, Writers in the Round. Hosted the first and third Wednesday of every month, it features four local songwriters trading tunes for an evening of stellar music. I arrived earlier than expected, I was actually making haste on my way as I thought I was going to be late, upon realizing the song writer’s were still sound checking and hashing out some details I sought a familiar face in Daniel Chase. We had met at Record Store Day, and informed me of the night, he noticed me first and we stuck up a conversation. Between his introductions and my own I was able to meet all the gentlemen playing that evening and chat a bit, I ordered myself a sandwich and relaxed before the music. The songwriters for the evening consisted of Chris Rosenquest, Kris Hansen, Nicky P, and Daniel Chase. It was apparent some of these gentlemen have been at this a while, and know each other quite well, plenty of good natured ribbing happening as they took to the stage. Read the rest of this entry »
The Scene – Record Store Day
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on April 26th, 2009
April 18th was National Record Store Day, what better excuse to get up early and catch a great in store performance from Daniel Chase, at Newbury Comics. Earlier in the week I had heard of Motif Magazine’s local music poll from some friends that had been nominated, and hurriedly checked out the poll. There were a ton of acts I’d yet to hear, being a sucker for singers songwriters and unaware of any in the area I focused on that category and did some myspace research.
Nicole and I wiped the slumber from our eyes around 10am, giving me plenty of time to caffeinate myself, shower and take her home. After meandering through Providence, I secured free parking next to the State House (yay for no meter fees on the weekends), thus saving myself from the Providence Place Parking Labyrinth, complete with ludicrous fees. Overjoyed with my parking spot, I strutted the two blocks to the mall, on the first halfway decent (not a deluge) day in weeks. Arriving at the mall four floors below and diametrically opposed from my destination I started the indoor journey, twice the distance I had traversed from my car. Read the rest of this entry »
