The Scene – July 10th at Lupo’s, Part 2: Senior Discount and Someday Providence

Senior Discount pumping up the crowd

Senior Discount pumping up the crowd

Continued from Part 1

Fighting back away from the bar I could hear Senior Discount well into their set, by the time I made it back outside and made my way through the crowd they were working on wrapping up what I believe to be their original song “Ataxia,” with a refrain of “I swear I’ll kill you, I swear I’ll fucking kill you” I find it hard to mistake. It was some in your face, loud punk rock, that got the audience pumped up. I made quick work of my first brew as Senior Discount began their song “Smile.” Once I had a free hand, I broke out my trusty Nikon and had a chance to clip the remainder of the song: Continue reading

The Scene – July 10th at Lupo’s, Part 1: The Cobra-matics and Baylock

Friday was certainly a big event day for Sound Session, there were tons of shows going on throughout Providence, but I settled on the Lupo’s Block Party. Featuring seven local music acts, The Cobra-Matics, Baylock, Senior Discount, Someday Providence, The Agents, Scotty Don’t and BadFish, it was one stop with the most to see. The whole night started at 6pm, so I made a mad dash after finishing work right at 6pm to get down to Lupo’s and get ready for some tunes.

The Scene – July 9th, 4 Corners at the Mediator

Brydan Smith and Kayla Ringelheim

Brydan Smith and Kayla Ringelheim

I had originally planned on laying low and staying in this Thursday night, but was enticed to head out once I heard the bill and realized the minute physical distance from my house of The Mediator (1.12 miles). As close and simple as the directions may have sounded, I still wound up shooting past the (unlabeled) street and circling the neighborhood for a good 20 minutes asking if people had heard of Rounds Ave before someone had a clue of what I was speaking. This month’s 4 Corners hosted by Don Tassone would feature Daniel Chase, Brydan Smith and Kayla Ringelheim. Always happy to catch a set from Daniel, I was excited to see his friend Brydan visiting from Ontario, over the previous months I’d listened to some of Brydan’s work and chatted a bit with him through myspace, and having the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with him the previous night, I was anxious to see his live performance. It also afforded me a great opportunity to enjoy Kayla’s songwriting with a bit more depth, and see be exposed to a long standing member of the Rhode Island Songwriter’s Association, Don Tassone for the first time. The format was very similar to Writers in the Round in that songwriters would play one song before handing the spotlight to the next, however 4 Corners used an intriguing gimmick in that the each round of songs had to adhere to a predetermined theme.

Wednesday July 8th, I enticed Nicole to come along for the special edition of Writers in the Round at Tazza Caffe, with the promise of a delectable hamburger for dinner once we arrived. Normally occurring the first and third Wednesday of every month, they offered an additional installment this second Wednesday to coincide with the citywide Sound Session Festival. Nicole and I arrived in plenty of time to order our food and a drink before the festivities began. Chris Rosenquest was at the helm, Mcing for the night, flanked by Nicky P and Daniel Chase, noticeably absent was Kris Hansen who I later found out would no longer be able to perform at the Writers in the Round series. After introducing the night and welcoming the guests, Chris mentioned a second round of songwriters, comprised of Kayla Ringelheim, Lily Costner, and Ana Mallozzi would be playing the intermission this week, furthering the specialty of this edition of Writers in the Round. The Scene – Tuesday July 7th, McFadden’s for Love Money and J.U.D.A. Strain

McFadden's Providence

McFadden's Providence

Sunday July 5th was the start of Providence Sound Session, the annual week long music festival that transforms Providence into a Mecca for musicians from across the nation. Every music venue across the city and some beyond host a healthy variety of live shows, from every musical genre you could imagine. Tuesday was the first night I got the chance to hit the town and head to McFadden’s, a Sound Session participating venue. It had been a while since I had seen Love Money play out, and it would mark the first time I’d had the chance to see J.U.D.A. Strain play, even if they had a musical relationship I would refer to as buddy bands. Seemingly close, they have shared many bills, have a vast familiarity of each others music and sing the others praises whenever the chance presents itself. It was a work night, so I had been debating whether or not to head down for the night, knowing full well I’d have minimal chance of wrangling either Nicole or Tim to tag along. After receiving a reminder email from Love Money regarding the show, I reprised my role as the lone show goer and headed out the door. Continue reading

The Scene – Funk Nugget’s Annual Fourth of July Bash at The Ocean Mist

DSCN0954Finally we got a break from the rain, the Fourth of July was the first fully dry day I can remember in months. Waking up early I was motivated and called a few people that had mentioned interest in heading the the beach if the day was nice, but alas, no one answered, I couldn’t even rouse my brother from his slumber to tag along so I set off to the coast by myself. It was quite windy down at the shore, and with all the storms as of late, quite a bit of seaweed floating in the tide. I relaxed with my iced coffee and book an just enjoyed the air for a while. I took a stroll and after a couple of hours, I’d had my fair share of fresh air and packed up to head back north for a family and friends BBQ. There was plenty of sangria and smoked pulled pork to go around. Delicious as it was, I limited my sangria consumption to two glasses, and stuck mainly to filling my belly before heading back south to The Ocean Mist, for Funk Nugget’s CD release party.
