Once Through Review – “Mister Barrington”

I was excited to receive a copy of the self titled debut of Mister Barrington, a trio based out of Brooklyn New York, this week. I’ve been checking their stuff out online for quite some time, and while the album still has no official release date it has been finalized and pressed. From what I gather, Oli Rockberger provides the vocals, keys and synthesizer, Owen Biddle provides the bass and electronics, and Zach Danziger provides the drums and percussion. Not only is the album self titled, it’s self produced, proving further the multi-talents of these three young lads. The twelve tracks seamlessly blend jazz, rock, funk, soul, R&B, electronica and psychedelia, and my first and lasting comparison is “the love child of Pink Floyd and Stevie Wonder.” In addition to the three musicians there are two main characters on the album, Mr Barrington himself, and his dog Mrs Waters, helping to solidify what I would call a theme or concept album. There’s a healthy dose of effects and possibly auto-tuning on the vocals (well I presume vocals, the words could all be effects generated), which help lend to the mystique of the album and its characters. It may already be available on iTunes but keep your eyes and ears pealed on the band’s twitter, facebook and myspace accounts for more information on the official release of the hard copy. A lot of thought went into the album, characters and artwork, it would be a shame to miss out on the full packaged product. Make sure to check out a streaming sample from the album after the MORE link below! If you’re in the New York City area these gents have an upcoming show on Monday January 24th, 2011 at The Rockwood Music Hall, 2nd stage, 196 Allen Street, Aaron Zimmer and his band open the night at 8pm and Mister Barrington graces the stage at 9pm, come early and stay late to see all the acts on the night. I for one, never like to miss any band performing as I know every one gives it their all! Continue reading
