The Scene – My First Trip to The Spot
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on October 31st, 2009
Saturday August 15th I rounded Nicole up to join me for my first trip to The Spot a non-profit, artists’ collaborative, performance space and art gallery, located on Thayer Street in Providence. Knowing ahead of time that The Spot has a BYOB liquor license, due to the astronomical and unfair cost of full service liquor licenses in the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations caused mainly by the bloated cost of our ineffective state government, and the area’s unfortunate puritanical and Catholic roots, Nicole and I stopped at Madeira Liquors for a six pack of my new favorite indulgence, Dogfish Head’s India Brown Ale. We arrived and traversed the stairs to the loft, filled with paintings and sculpture and music, a true artist’s haven. Divided into two eclectically decorated rooms, you enter into the stage room, explicitly designed for live performance, music, comedy or theater. The second room , called “The Ballroom,” had a more open floor plan with a check-in bar and refrigerator for your drinks, and a lounging area with chaises and bean bag chairs with a layered cloth overhang. So comfortable and inviting looked the lounge area, I thought it best to avoid, at least for the time being, lest I’d be in for a nap rather than a night of music. There were four performers for the evening, Jenny Brown, Buick Audra, Jon Tierney and The Kris Hansen Kollective.

Nicky P, Chris Rosenquest and Daniel Chase

Ana Mallozzi, Lily Costner and Kayla Riengleheim
Wednesday July 8th, I enticed Nicole to come along for the special edition of Writers in the Round at Tazza Caffe, with the promise of a delectable hamburger for dinner once we arrived. Normally occurring the first and third Wednesday of every month, they offered an additional installment this second Wednesday to coincide with the citywide Sound Session Festival. Nicole and I arrived in plenty of time to order our food and a drink before the festivities began. Chris Rosenquest was at the helm, Mcing for the night, flanked by Nicky P and Daniel Chase, noticeably absent was Kris Hansen who I later found out would no longer be able to perform at the Writers in the Round series. After introducing the night and welcoming the guests, Chris mentioned a second round of songwriters, comprised of Kayla Ringelheim, Lily Costner, and Ana Mallozzi would be playing the intermission this week, furthering the specialty of this edition of Writers in the Round. Here we are July finally, and quite an exciting month of music indeed!
Starting the month off right last night Madonna and Child and FRIT graced the stage at The Wheelhouse in Narragansett. I wish I was able to make it down to enjoy the show.
If you haven’t gotten out to a show yet, July is your chance there is so much music, I don’t know where to begin! Okay, well we’ll start with Tonight as its only logical. Read the rest of this entry »
The Scene – June 4th to Snookers for the Final Drop Out Night

Big Jon and Kris with the Drop Out Night Styles
Thursday June 4th I was debating with myself whether or not I wanted to hit the town. Having only been to Snookers once before, and it being a work night I was leaning towards staying home. It then came to my attention that this was to be the final Drop Out Night at Snookers, as Providence’s best pool hall would be changing locations later this summer. I’d only recently heard of Drop Out Night, a summer Thursday night acoustic music tradition on the smoker’s deck at Snookers, though this would be the final show after a three year run. It was after 15 minutes of circling the side streets and back alleys of Providence before I recognized the area surrounding Snookers, without my brother Tim, a human GPS for Rhode Island, on hand, I had to rely on directions I’d scribbled from MapQuest. Either a combination of construction in town made the directions convoluted, or my illegible chicken scratch had fooled me into a wrong turn, regardless I was there plenty early to chat a bit with Kris Hansen and Big Jon Tierney before they began their set. The Scene – May 6th, My First Writers in the Round
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on May 13th, 2009
Wednesday the 6th I motivated myself to head down to Tazza Cafe for their twice monthly acoustic night, Writers in the Round. Hosted the first and third Wednesday of every month, it features four local songwriters trading tunes for an evening of stellar music. I arrived earlier than expected, I was actually making haste on my way as I thought I was going to be late, upon realizing the song writer’s were still sound checking and hashing out some details I sought a familiar face in Daniel Chase. We had met at Record Store Day, and informed me of the night, he noticed me first and we stuck up a conversation. Between his introductions and my own I was able to meet all the gentlemen playing that evening and chat a bit, I ordered myself a sandwich and relaxed before the music. The songwriters for the evening consisted of Chris Rosenquest, Kris Hansen, Nicky P, and Daniel Chase. It was apparent some of these gentlemen have been at this a while, and know each other quite well, plenty of good natured ribbing happening as they took to the stage. Read the rest of this entry »
