The Scene – May 12th, Dragged out on a Tuesday

McFadden's in Providence
Around 9:30pm I was ready to crawl into bed and pop on a DVD when my phone rang and I answered. It was Zig Zag, he was calling to see if I was going to attending McFadden’s that night for the Innocent Uprising show about which I’d forgotten. I was throwing every “I’m old, lame and have to be up for work” type excuses then Zig Zag uttered two phrases that are like my kryptonite “But Sully, there is NO COVERCHARGE and I’LL BUY YOU A GUINNESS!” Well apparently that made up my mind, I spent about 10 minutes trying to convince Tim to come along with me, for which I recieved the “are you daft” look. I knew Tim had spent some years working across the street from McFadden’s at TEN: Steak and Sushi, so he must be able to provide me directions. Alas, he said “Sorry Bro, I’m on cruise control in Providence, don’t know how to tell you, I just know how to get there.” Damit, onto Mapquest and head to downtown. Continue reading
The Scene – May 9th, The Box to The City Cafe to The Box
Saturday May 9th I was diligently working on the blog for most of the morning when I decided to head to Zig Zag‘s a little early, knowing Kyle Nicholas, Zig Zag’s band mate in Innocent Uprising, was playing an acoustic set at The City Cafe it wouldn’t be too difficult to twist his arm into serving as my navigator for the evening. Last time I’d seen Kyle he had said he was sharing the stage this night with Andrea Belanger, someone he KNEW I’d like and shouldn’t miss. Pulling off I-95 I noticed the marquee at The Box and was reminded Sinister Minstrel and Gravity Works were playing there this fine night as well. SCORE! I parked at Zig Zag’s place and ran down to the box to say hi to some of the guys I’d been running into so frequently, and got the skinny on when they each would be starting their sets. Change of plans, I think I can squeeze in bits of four acts tonight, time to put on the game face. When I arrived to Zig Zag’s I found Zig Zag and Kyle packing up the portable PA system and loading it into the car after which we each cracked a beer and chatted. Kyle reiterated the point that I shouldn’t miss Andrea’s set tonight, but they were going to be trading off half sets, allowing more patrons throughout the night to see each of their acts. Thank you sir for making my logistics all the easier for the night! Kyle headed out and after some prodding Zig Zag was ready to come out for the night. I told him of my ambitious plan, and got him even more excited, but we still had to wait for his friends to arrive before we took to the road. We waited for a bit and Jess arrived with another of their friends, we all grabbed another brew from the fridge in wait for Meg, who was coming over for a few shots before hitting the clubs. The Scene – May 8th, Three Performances at AS220
Friday May 8th was a show I was anticipating for a while, Funkatronic and The Muve, both of whom I’d seen recently and thoroughly enjoyed, were playing, along with a folky singer songstress I’d yet to see Chrisy Gavin. Deciding it was much too good a show to attend alone I assaulted my brother as he game home from work, flustered from traffic, it seemed like a loosing battle until I reminded him Funkatronic was playing, knowing full well he wouldn’t pass them up after missing their Wheelhouse show. Tim came along the last time I saw them play AS220, and had mentioned wanting to see them again. Knowing full well he wouldn’t pass them up after missing their Wheelhouse show. If you have not been to AS220 before, make sure you get there plenty early, I’ve recently developed an insatiable addictions to Taqueria Pacifica’s burritos, filling, inexpensive and delicious they are only served until 9:30pm (around the start of the music) inside the bar. Tim and I played a mini version of “OMG Street Spot,” he won again, pointing out a free street spot just as I’d given up and pulled into a pay lot. I quickly made my way back out of the lot and pulled what Nicole calls “The Rhode Island,” inching across one half of a two lane road while no cars are coming from the left, to make DAMN SURE the oncoming traffic from the right sees you trying to cross the street into the parking spot you are telepathically claiming. Tim and I made our way down to the venue, May 7th had been what I’ve heard referred to as “Drop Out Night,” the first spring night that Providence patio liquor licenses activate and venues that have decks and patios can allow alcohol outside, so every sidewalk table was packed as we approached. Tim and I ordered pints and toasted to making it through a brutal Rhode Island winter, and the turn of weather from the recent deluge. Heading into the live music half of AS220 we spotted our cousin Katie, who’d reserved us some seats at her front row table, and made conversation as Funkatronic was sound checking. I duped Tim into watching our things as Katie needed another Pinot and I had a burrito hankering, we made our way back to the bar half of AS220. Continue reading
“Life is What Happens to Your While You’re Busy Making Other Plans”
If you didn’t know, that’s a John Lennon quote from “Beautiful Boy” from the 1980 Double Fantasy album, check it out if you can.

Zig Zag and I on his back deck

Zig Zag, Bo with Winston, and Drea Jello anyone?
As with many weekend days my original plans for Sunday was to blog off my buns and catch up on some typing for all the fantastic shows I’ve seen of late, but alas life happened and my plans got majorly derailed yesterday. Dropping m’lady off shortly after awakening, I returned home to have an instant message from her, reminding my that my phone must still be off from the previous night. Turning on my phone it immediately started to go off like the Robot from Lost in Space. Nicole continued her messages to me as I checked my texts. Tim had neglected to tell me that he would be arriving back from Detroit today and needed a lift from the airport, meanwhile m’ldays cats had succumb to their primal instincts and slaughtered “a huge gross bug” between her living room and bedroom, much too disgusting for her to handle on her own. My Favorite CD of 2008
Matt Costa’s “Unfamiliar Faces” was by far my favorite album of 2008. I’ve just found out Amazon is having a special for 24 hours, Unfamiliar Faces for $2.99.
If you like what you hear, check out Brushfire Records. I love what they are doing over there, by far my favorite record label since Apple!

The Scene – May 7th, Sound Sessions Search, Round 14
Thursday May 7th I was right back down on Westminster again, this time at the Providence Black Repertory Company for the SEXCoffee and Fungus Amungus show. Providence Sound Sessions is a week long, genre-defying music festival hosted at various venues throughout the city, during the preceding months they hold rounds of voting in person and on line to determine the festival’s lineup for the year. This provided me a great opportunity to check out Fungus Amungus, whom I’ve heard so much about, as well as SEXCoffee, a band of whom I’d heard very little. Working a bit later than usual for the day, I was rather rushed in getting ready and heading downtown, nary a moment to eat. Once I’d secured parking and meandered my way towards the Black Rep, cigarette in hand, I realized my only dining option before my destination would be Tazza Cafe. Continue reading

Tunes Around Town – Shows May 15th – May 17th
TONS of great tunes around this weekend, especially tonight. Buckle down and get out on the town!
Friday May 15th
- Providence – Gravity Works and The Brew at Jerky’s. The Brew’s first trip to RI in a while, moderately sized club, good rocky/poppy/jam scene tonight. (Trying to Attend)
- Providence – World Threat (experimental Hip-Hop), Blue Ribbon (synth/rock pop), Last One Standing (modern rock) and Harpoon (classic rocky/jammy) at AS220. Big lineup of varying styles, AS220 is a small, artsy venue, good eats if you get there early enough. I’ve seen Harpoon before and enjoyed their set, can’t claim I’ve heard of any of the other acts.
- Providence – Zig Zag at The City Cafe. Small venue, acoustic show, originals and covers I suspect.
- Providence – Cartune Heroes at Ri Ra. Fun Irish pub, Cartune Heroes provide exciting classic rock covers.
- Narragansett – Rotary Trio and Formal Action at The Wheelhouse, a medium sized venue. Rotary Trio is bluesy jam rock, Formal Action is a little harder, psychedelic jam reggae.
- Narragansett – Daniel Chase at The Bon Vue Inn, probably playing downstairs, acoustic singer songwriter.
Saturday May 16th
- Providence – Daniel Chase and Andrea Belanger at the Brooklyn Coffee and Tea House. Two acoustic singer/songwriters worth checking out. Starts at 7:30pm. (Trying to Attend)
- Bellingham – GROW at The Patriot’s Bar and Grill in Bellingham, MA, haven’t seen GROW or been to this venue, they seem like funk rock hip-hop from their myspace songs. Starts at 8pm
Sunday May 17th
- Bridgeport – Jose Docen at The Acoustic Cafe. Unique singer songwriter, soulful, folky, check out the show if you are in CT
Give me a Headsup if I missed your show!
