The Scene – June 11th, Headed to NYC for Ricky Valente at Arlene’s and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

A few months ago Ricky Valente alerted me to this particular gig he had in June, allowing Nicole and myself a lengthy enough heads up to take some time off work. We took June 11th and 12th off, and in the meantime I secured us some tickets to the taping of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Having little to no familiarity with New York I decided to set off after work on Wednesday June 10th, on our way to stay with my friend Jess and her finance Stef in Brooklyn. Heading to Providence my stomach began to growl, once at Nicole’s apartment she agreed we should probably get some food before hitting the road and we decided on the closest best eats, United BBQ. After filling our bellies it was probably around 7pm before we hopped on I-95 South for the three and a half hour drive. We were making pretty good time until we hit some construction spots in Connecticut. Upon arriving in New York by about 10pm there was some thick traffic over some sketchy looking bridges and after only one wrong turn through a red light and two missed turns, we arrived at out destination. Jess and Stef were excited to see us and after introducing us to Riesling their new kitten, we opened a bottle of wine and had a relaxing evening chatting and sipping some Portuguese red.  A few hours passed before Stef admitted she had work in the morning and we all set to retire for the night. Impromptu Michael Jackson Tribute by Erykah Badu and The Legendary Roots Crew

Questlove

Questlove

Friday night, after the passing of the King of Pop, The Roots invited Erykah Badu to sit in for Episode 75 of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, for the night they performed as a Michael Jackson Cover Band, which was a beautiful and fitting tribute.  Being a huge fan of the show,  I follow some of The Roots tweets.  Today Questlove (@questlove) provided links from zShare  to some tracks they laid down before the taping of the show.  Both were so beautiful and made me smile, I wanted to share them before you missed them:

I Wanna Be Where You Are and Billie Jean

Be sure to thank Questlove for sharing some gems from his personal vault!

The Scene – April 26th, Slightly Stoopid and The Roots

Captain Kirk, dodging my camera

Captain Kirk, dodging my camera

Yes friends, I went to a hip-hop show on purpose. Those who know me best know that I have had a disdain for all things hip-hop for a very long time. Generally, I would say it comes from how I abhor its violent and materialistic messages, which are much removed from my peace-loving hippie nature. As I’ve gotten older, my musical tastes have broadened, I’ve become much less stubborn and and more open minded to different genres of music. The closest to hip-hop that I listen to would be G. Love and Special Sauce, and only recently (past 6 months) been listing to that cat. Living with my brother, a hip-hop fanatic, for the past few years certainly forced my exposure to rap and hip-hop, and can no longer instantly turn off my eardrums at the sound. In college and beyond I have had the reputation to bring music I dig wherever I go, and hijack the sound system at any given party or BBQ, replacing what ever is playing with something I’d like to hear. The Roots are familiar to me only in name, as many friends have raved about their music for years, professing “Sully, its not like the shit hip-hop you hate, you might like it.” I’m a Libra, stubborn, and I’ve been known to threaten to break knuckles if you try to replace my Beatles or Donovan or any other Folk or Jam band playing in my CD player with hip-hop or rap. At about 1:30pm yesterday my buddy Ashley called saying she and some of my other friends had two extra tickets to Slightly Stoopid and The Roots at the URI Ryan Center that night. Never turning down a good show and just having just become enamored with The Roots from their work on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, I set out to attend my first hop-hop show (on purpose at least). Tim and I made the trek down to South County and hit up the Mews to meet the ladies and get on our sauce.

Yesterday was originally intended to catch up on my blogging, but I got sidetracked with another show, and a great one at that. Lame excuse I know, but with the Heroes season finale tonight, you will have to wait for further updates later in the week.

Ok, customer finally came back from placing me on hold.

Peace and Love
