The Scene – Gravity Works at McFadden’s

Gravity Works

Gravity Works

Tuesday August 11th, after much self persuasion I made my way down to McFadden’s to catch, at least, Gravity Works first set of their headlining night at McFadden’s. Located at 52 Pine Street in Providence, Mcfadden’s has a long history as a chain sports bar and Irish pub, but is relatively new to hosting live music. With the rash of live music club closings (The Call, The Centry Lounge, The Livingroom just to name a few that come to mind) over the past few years, many bars and clubs have been shifting paradigms to accommodate the incredible local music scene. While I applaud Mcfadden’s efforts to host live music, it remains of of my least favorite places to see a show. Despite the lack of proper house PA system, and stage for that matter Gravity Works took to the floor with Zack Fenner on guitar and vocals, Nate Beauvais on bass guitar and vocals, Paul Silvia on percussion and vocals, Maro Leclerc on Keys and Joe Jannerelli on drums, and rocked the house:

The Scene – June 4th to Snookers for the Final Drop Out Night

Big Jon and Kris with the Drop Out Night Styles

Big Jon and Kris with the Drop Out Night Styles

Thursday June 4th I was debating with myself whether or not I wanted to hit the town. Having only been to Snookers once before, and it being a work night I was leaning towards staying home. It then came to my attention that this was to be the final Drop Out Night at Snookers, as Providence’s best pool hall would be changing locations later this summer. I’d only recently heard of Drop Out Night, a summer Thursday night acoustic music tradition on the smoker’s deck at Snookers, though this would be the final show after a three year run. It was after 15 minutes of circling the side streets and back alleys of Providence before I recognized the area surrounding Snookers, without my brother Tim, a human GPS for Rhode Island, on hand, I had to rely on directions I’d scribbled from MapQuest. Either a combination of construction in town made the directions convoluted, or my illegible chicken scratch had fooled me into a wrong turn, regardless I was there plenty early to chat a bit with Kris Hansen and Big Jon Tierney before they began their set. The Scene – May 15th, Jerky’s for a Surprise Three Band Bill

Jerky's Live Music Hall

Jerky's Live Music Hall

Friday May 15th I worked about an hour late, which isn’t too bad compared to most days, and called Nicole to make sure she still wanted to attend the show at Jerky’s I’d been talking about all week. We were both a little beat from long and stressful work weeks but we thought it best not to be bums and make it out this night. I arrived at Nicole’s place to find she’d already eaten, myself starving I suggested we grab a brew each at the liquor store and hit United BBQ so I could put something in my stomach sooner rather than later. I scarfed my pulled chicken sandwich as she picked at my fries, and we got our butts out of there fast to secure parking downtown before the show. Its come to my attention that my anal retentive punctuality usual results in being early for everything, much was the case this night, Nicole and I arrive at Jerky’s about an hour before the music actually started. I had only known of two bands on the bill for the evening before arrival, but after speaking with Zach Fenner for a bit I was informed the bill consisted of Spank City, Gravity Works, and The Brew. The Scene – May 9th, The Box to The City Cafe to The Box

Sinister Minstrel at The Box

Sinister Minstrel at The Box

Saturday May 9th I was diligently working on the blog for most of the morning when I decided to head to Zig Zag‘s a little early, knowing Kyle Nicholas, Zig Zag’s band mate in Innocent Uprising, was playing an acoustic set at The City Cafe it wouldn’t be too difficult to twist his arm into serving as my navigator for the evening. Last time I’d seen Kyle he had said he was sharing the stage this night with Andrea Belanger, someone he KNEW I’d like and shouldn’t miss. Pulling off I-95 I noticed the marquee at The Box and was reminded Sinister Minstrel and Gravity Works were playing there this fine night as well. SCORE! I parked at Zig Zag’s place and ran down to the box to say hi to some of the guys I’d been running into so frequently, and got the skinny on when they each would be starting their sets. Change of plans, I think I can squeeze in bits of four acts tonight, time to put on the game face. When I arrived to Zig Zag’s I found Zig Zag and Kyle packing up the portable PA system and loading it into the car after which we each cracked a beer and chatted. Kyle reiterated the point that I shouldn’t miss Andrea’s set tonight, but they were going to be trading off half sets, allowing more patrons throughout the night to see each of their acts. Thank you sir for making my logistics all the easier for the night! Kyle headed out and after some prodding Zig Zag was ready to come out for the night. I told him of my ambitious plan, and got him even more excited, but we still had to wait for his friends to arrive before we took to the road. We waited for a bit and Jess arrived with another of their friends, we all grabbed another brew from the fridge in wait for Meg, who was coming over for a few shots before hitting the clubs. The Scene – May 2, To The Wheelhouse, Yet Again

The Attic at The Wheelhouse

The Attic at The Wheelhouse

Gravity Works at The Wheelhouse

Gravity Works at The Wheelhouse

See what I meant about how I wished The Wheelhouse was offering season passes this year? I was heading back down to South County for another Saturday show, this time It was to enjoy the jam rock styles of Gravity Works and The Attic. A common theme, I was intending on finishing up the previous Saturday’s show , but last minute decided to make the trip, having seen both bands in the past month I knew it was going to be a great show I shouldn’t miss. I arrived fairly early, and at the door, didn’t notice anyone other than the bouncer in the live music section, not even band members. Once inside I realized the crowd was packed into the bar section, Celtics vs Bulls, playoff game 7 had entranced the masses. When asked I’ll say my favorite basketball team is the Celts, with the disclaimer, really I don’t follow basketball, and last time I was up on the Celts, Bird and McHale were the stars. Formerly an obsessive Red Sox and Patriots fan, after the whirlwind of the early and mid 2000s, my sports obsession has been satiated. Actually, I try not to watch either any longer as my heart and blood pressure just cannot handle the stress. Read the rest of this entry »

The Scene – Solo in The Box for a While

Newton would be proud!

Newton would be proud!

Capacity: 49

Capacity: 49

April 11th, Saturday night was the same story to start, unable to rouse any troops I assaulted Providence solo again.  This time I went to The Box on North Main Street to catch Sinister Minstrel and Gravity Works as per Zach Fenner’s suggestion.  I arrived at The Box (appropriately named as the capacity is 49) around 9:45 and had time to grab a basket of fries and chat with Zach and some of his friends and band mates.  I came to find out that Zach would be the guitarist and co-front man for both bands performing this evening.  Just another example of hard working local musicians, both Sinister Minstrel and Gravity Works are projects of his, while also playing guitar for Fungus Amungus (one of those bands I’d heard a lot about, but never really checked out, digging their tunes on Myspace).

Sinister Minstrel at The Box

Sinister Minstrel at The Box

Sinister Minstrel started the night with folky blues number, “Lady in Green” (guessing at the title).  Zach tore it up on the electric guitar accompanied by a steady acoustic rhythm provided by Mike Davis.  Jeff Siatkowski laid out some nice foot stomping bass groves with Nic Deigan rockin’ some great beats on the kit they had the whole room paying attention. Not only was the music tight, their lyrics were hilarious.  They were like the bastard child of Tenatious D and Flight of the Conchords with hard rock jam sensibilities.  I caught myself simultaneously shaking my ass and busing a gut.  They played a heavy and humorous version of “Makeout Mountain” and Nic really let go on the skins.  At various points throughout the night they took 15 second set breaks for “The Minstrel Toast,” making sure everyone on stage had the chance to wet their whistle, the camaraderie was great!  Towards the end of their set they invited some friends to join them on stage.  Kat (Zach’s Girlfriend) and Nate Beauvais (bassist for both Gravity Works and GROW) came down front and helped cover FOTC’s “Think about it” passing verses back and forth while the band jammed out the track.  Great version!  They started to wind down the set and played a song that had me busting at the seams, I’ll guess it’s titled “Pickin’ My Nose” (see the clip after the break).
