The Scene – July 10th at Lupo’s, Part 1: The Cobra-matics and Baylock
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on August 24th, 2009
Friday was certainly a big event day for Sound Session, there were tons of shows going on throughout Providence, but I settled on the Lupo’s Block Party. Featuring seven local music acts, The Cobra-Matics, Baylock, Senior Discount, Someday Providence, The Agents, Scotty Don’t and BadFish, it was one stop with the most to see. The whole night started at 6pm, so I made a mad dash after finishing work right at 6pm to get down to Lupo’s and get ready for some tunes.

Club Hell, April 10, 2009
April 10th, Friday night, time to shake my bones again. Anyone else sick of the amount of rain we’ve gotten this spring? It was a cats and dogs kind of night, m’lady was out of town and my brother had plans elsewhere so I headed out to Providence by my lonesome for a marathon run of bands in a single night. First off I arrived to Club Hell around 8:30pm a bit late to see the start of Forgetful Jones.
Unbeknown to me at Club Hell “Doors at 8pm” means bands start at 8:01, not the first frustrating experiance of the night. Despite my late arrival I was on time to catch the final two songs from the first band visiting from Boston for the night. They were certainly heavier than I would normally seek, and very polished compared to other hard rock acts I’ve seen, lyrics were sung, not screamed, and astoundingly up-beat for harder rock. Their space declares they play rock, funk and fusion, I must have been present for their heavier rock handed ending. I was impressed with their energy and heart in a pretty empty room, Kenyatta Savage was moving around, singing powerfully and making his stage presence known. Jon Holland’s guitar solos were precise and melodic, doing a great job of pulling out of a solo back to rhythm. Matt Athanasiou provided some great fills on the kit and Niles Tooher’s fleet fingers made the floor rumble on bass. After their set I was pleasantly surprised they were going to be playing the Northeastern Quad this Tuesday, I always loved catching the bands on the Quad between classes. The Scene – WBRU Rockhunt Finals

Chris Parry of Baylock at Lupo's
April 4th I was right back to Lupo’s for the WBRU Rockhunt Finals, 4 local bands for $7 how could you go wrong. Well the night started out with the [Viennagram:]. While anyone who has the balls to get on stage and play instruments has more musical ability than I, I will leave it at these guys were definitely not my style. My opinion was probably not helped by the fact that after their set the lead singer kept gangling by me in Gollum-esque fashion, wearing a wide striped red and white circus jacket and top hat, looking as though he’d had 3 too many tabs of acid.
Cozying up to the stage I ran into some gents from Innocent Uprising (and their crowd) out to support their boys in Baylock, great to see locals out in support of each other. As usual Baylock did a great job of showcasing their versatility from the acoustically driven “Conscience” and “Rise” to the heavier thrashing “General Store” and “Blue Amberol.” John bounced around on bass expending more energy in one set than I do in a year, Kirby pounded the skins creating a great back beat for Chris’s tight rhythm and additional percussion laid the groundwork while Tim’s blazed his precise lead. Going for the gold they played the most impressive version of “Patience” I’ve seen to date. Read the rest of this entry »
