The Scene – 2010 Catch-up January

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” – John Lennon
I’ve been exceedingly busy and bogged down so far this year, I’ve always kept my YouTube Channel well updated with videos of the shows I’ve caught just as soon as I can edit them into clips, but rarely have I had the time to sit and give proper attention where attention is due. Here’s a blast through of the amazing music I had the opportunity to catch in January.
The Scene – A Donovan First
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on January 31st, 2010
This past Sunday January 24th I woke early to edit and load video on-line when I noticed a tweet from @DonovanOfficial that Donovan would be doing his first ever concert stream live from Germany at 8:30pm Central European Time. After some quick calculations I figured I had about 2 hours before the festivities began. Anyone that knows me personally knows Donovan is one of my all time favorite artists, second only to The Beatles, I jortled with joy. Touted as an evening with Donovan and Friends and that he’d be playing new songs I immediately called Mike Zarro to make sure he was aware, we spent the next hour or so discussing possibilities of the set, would the new songs be something due on the eagerly anticipated “Ritual Groove?” We discussed Don’s recent changes to his on-line presence and the likelihood that he’d finally hired some younger cats to bring him forward virtually into the new decade. No offense to Stewart Lawrence he makes a great road manager, bongo/conga player and brother-in-law to Donovan but his website was lacking until recently.

The Scene – A Saturday at The Spot

Saturday September 26th I went down to The Spot on Thayer for a lovely art show and concert. There was a multitude of cool artwork from paintings and post cards to sculpture and jewelry. Knowing less about art than I do music the best I could say is I really liked it all, I even bought a pair of earrings for Nicole as a birthday present a few weeks later from Serasi Jewlery. Scheduled to perform for the evening were The Chelsy Lau Band and Josh Fulford. After a few minutes of perusing the ballroom’s artwork I grabbed a seat in the stage room and got ready to enjoy the show.
The Scene – Dinner and a Show on My Birthday
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on December 20th, 2009

Friday September 25th Nicole and I grabbed a bunch of my friends and headed out to Luxe Burger Bar in downtown Providence. Author’s note: make reservations, or your bar bill will exceed your dinner bill, we had a party of 8 and waited about 2 hours to be seated, but it was our own damn fault for not thinking to reserve a table ahead of time. The food and company were great and after a lovely dinner Nicole and I made our way over to Jerky’s for the Fungus Amungus show.
The Scene – FOOS Fest, Surprise Concert in My Backyard

Sunday September 20th I was rudely awakened by my brother at 6am with the gentle reminder he needed to be at the airport, flying out for a work conference in an hour and a half. Groggily we made our way to Dunkin’s before we headed to TF Green. On the way Tim made the comment “Are you going to that?” Still unconscious I muttered “What Dunkin’s? Yes aren’t we like a block away” Grabbing my head and rotating it 90 degrees he pointed out the huge billboard for the Fall Out of Summer Festival hosted by The Artists Exchange in Cranston. Unbeknown to me there was a lovely concert and art series going on in Rolf Square that day, had I not been roused from my slumber at the ass crack of dawn, on a Sunday no less, I would have been none the wiser. After kicking Tim to the curb, er, ah, bidding my brother a fond farewell at TF Green I made my way back home and crashed out for a few more hours. After consulting their website I realized things were about to start and I headed down to FOOS Fest around noon.
The Scene – Santa Mamba at The Black Rep
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on December 6th, 2009
Thursday September 17th I took off to Providence after work for the Santa Mamba show at The Black Rep. This six piece, Providence based, Latin rock band blend many styles into an electrifying live show. Gio Murillo fronts Santa Mamba providing vocals and acoustic rhythm guitar accompanied by John Medeiros on lead guitar and vocals, Nick Wade on the bass groves, with Aaron Wade on keys and vocals, John “Drum Warrior” Ferreira on drums and Gary Mendoza on additional percussion. I arrived to The Black Rep early to enjoy a few drink specials and talk with the band a bit before their set. Once the room began to fill out Santa Mamaba took to the stage and rocked the house:

The Scene – Local Flavors Drops and SEXCoffee CD Release

Saturday September 5th I woke surprisingly early, especially after arriving back from Ricky’s surprise show so late. Wiping the slumber from my eyes I posted the first installment of Local Flavors and headed out to Providence for breakfast with m’lady and a furious day of promotion. Arriving on Thayer Street at about Noon I canvased the area talking about local music and handing out fliers. After about 5 hours Zach Fenner joined me with an acoustic to make the remainder of the promo time fly by. Thanks Zach! Read the rest of this entry »
The Scene – Surprise Ricky Valente Show in Somerville
Posted by Sully in Live Review, The Scene on November 1st, 2009
Friday September 4th I was working my day away, as normally I do Monday through Friday. I had it in my head I was staying in and catching up on typing reviews from shows I’d seen. Around 2pm, Ricky Valente gave me a call, I assumed just to check in and talk about the concluding night of his tour in Philly, but Ricky had a surprise for me. Mike Levesque, Ricky’s friend and drummer for more then a half dozen years, had a gig in Somerville that night at Sally O’Brien’s with one of his other many bands, and secured Ricky a closing spot for the evening. If they could make it from Philadelphia to Somerville in time. An impromptu tour finale show, within reasonable driving distance, I was so there. Throughout the rest of my work day I sent a few texts and general social notifications around to gather some company. Ultimately able to persuade my brother Tim to come for the ride, we took off north towards Somerville around 7:30 and made some decent time, we arrived in time to catch a bit of The Callous Stars set, and the entirety of The Montgomerys.
