Gamblin with Grabert


The Green Room was a little short staffed this week so Sully was joined by Dennis Emsley as co-host. Normally the silent sound engineer, Dennis stepped to the mic to provide help with banter and band input. Josh Grabert of the Gamblin Hands ventured to the studio for the normal interview and performance, but sat in on all sections of the show, providing input and asking a few well timed questions. Josh plays six of his originals for the Green Room, “Saint Peter,” “Take My Soul,” “Brow Street,” “Life on a River,” “K Dubbs and AQ,” and “Its a Feeling.”

A Berndt/Mills Double Feature

Josh and Sully quickly discuss the happenings on The Scene this past week before being joined by Jay Berndt and Dan Mills, two very different songwriters.  They speak with Jay first who plays four songs from his upcoming release “Sad Bastard Songs;” “Nameless,” “Black, Tan and Wasted,” “Different Things,” and “Considering Taking My Life.”  Dan Mills follows and talks about his album “Fiction in Photographs,” as well as a couple of upcoming shows on his calendar.  He follows suit with four songs as well “Bernadette,” “Rhody Girl,” “Some Things,” and “Just As Scared.”  After the guest double feature, the gents run down the long list of Tunes Around Town for this upcoming week!

Sully’s Cafe at The Green Room Episode 11

A Benediction and A Comeback

Sully and Josh discuss last week’s shows including Creation Tuesday, Providence Promotion’s Blues Revival featuring Shane Manzi and Friends, Zach Deputy, and SEXCoffee‘s comeback show featuring For The Love of Sloane and Pistol Shot Gypsy, complete with after-party featuring VulGarrity and Rounding Off Numbers. The gents are then joined by G. W. Mercure of The Benedictions, a local singer songwriter who had chance to play four tunes for The Green Room, two tracks from “The Benedictions Play Devil Music,” “Light at the End of the Tunnel,” and “Till I’ve Died,” as well as two new tracks, “I Do Not Play No Rock and Roll,” and “I Used to Be Such a Nice Boy.”  As usual the boys wrap up with a rundown of tunes going on around town this upcoming week!

Full Atoms

Full Atoms come together and join Sully and Josh in the studio for chat about their recent formation and three Live at the Green Room Tracks, “Full Circle,” “The Gutter,” and “Midget March.”  The gents discuss last week’s festivities throughout The Scene with details on Creation Tuesday, a Special 4Zero1 night at The Underground with Audio McSwagger and the Naukabout Festival.  Lots of great show upcoming this week, with great back to back double venue bill Friday, SEXCoffee‘s Comeback show with Pistol Shot Gypsy and For the Love of Sloane at the Colosseum, followed by VulGarrity and Rounding Off Numbers at The Spot Underground.

Sully’s Cafe at the Green Room Episode 9, Knocking About the City

Sully and Josh are visited by Jeff Conley, by way of Cape Cod.  After a long and detailed discussion of the scene, including Creation Tuesday, G.W. Mecure and Allysen Callery, and Sauce with Fungus Amungus, the boys chat with Jeff about his music, band, Naukabout Music Festival and his homemade stringed instruments.  Jeff performs solo playing four songs for The Green Room, “For Gibby,” “A Thousand Steps,” “Just a Branch,” and “A Door.”  As usual, the show raps up with a quick round up of upcoming shows, and a quick thanks.

Sully’s Cafe at The Green Room Episode 8, A Dose of Sound Session

Sully and Josh are joined in the studio by Mike Rabito, Will Raymund and Andrew Krahn of The Effective Dose in The Green Room.  Short staffed, The Effective Dose brought some tracks from their Friday July 23rd show to share with the listeners, to give a full effect of their live set.  Discussion of The Scene included elaborate details on many Sound Session events including The Divine Second Line Brass Band, What Cheer Brigade, Trombone Shorty, Creation Tuesday featuring Heather Waxman, The Southern New England Music Conference, Soldiers of Life, A*Live Fridays, Sinister Minstrel, Route .44Who Dem, The Sound Session Finale Parade, Kyle Nicholas, Viral Sound and a surprise appearance from Fungus Amungus.

Sully and Josh are joined in the studio by For the Love of Sloane and discuss their many awards and accolades as well as a big show they had recently performed, and another, even bigger show they have coming up soon.  After a lengthy discussion, Sloane had the opportunity to play four songs before heading out the door to stay on their schedule.  Dennis Emsley joined the gents to help out at the sound board, and make sure they could muster the best sound possible without the presence of Sharkbone or Rene.  They discuss the insanely busy past week in local music with quick coverage of a lot of the shows that had happened in Providence, including but not limited to, Creation Tuesday, Shane Manzi and Friends, Jon Tierney, Dan Mills, Daniel Chase, Chris Rosenquest, Nicky P, Kris Hansen, Scare Don’t Fear, Shannon Corey, Funkatronic, Spogga, Suave Richardson and Santa Mamba.  Tunes Around Town is perhaps a bit thinner in discussion this week than most, but with Providence Sound Session happening, more than enough music to quench your ears can be found all over “The Creative Capital.”

Sully, Josh and Rene are joined by Donald King of The Black Repertory Theater and Afrosonic Collective as well as Armande Milhouse of Audio McSwagger (WARNING: In-Line Sound) for discussions of what they’ve got going on as well Providence Sound Session.  Armande brought three tracks to share with the audience, “Under My Skin,” “Selfish,” and “Oh.” Discussion of The Scene includes full detailed reviews of sets from Rounding Off Numbers; Spogga and Joey Spinella with guest appearances from Mike Sahashian, Sidy Maiga, and Matt Odabashian; Paul Lowe Jr. and the I-95s; Kyle Nicholas; Sauce; The Shane Manzi Band; Dan Mills; and Barefoot Truth. The gents went a bit long this time around, about 1 hour 37 minutes long, but still had plenty of time to cover upcoming Tunes Around Town! Audio Stream and Download available after the break.

“Frequency with a Bang”

Recorded on the Fourth of July, Sharkbone and Sully were a bit understaffed and still pushed out a quick podcast for the listeners.  They discuss the happenings at the last Creation Tuesday, with appearances by Josh Fulford, Chris Rosenquest, Mother of Dylan, Green Frequency, U.S. Sam, Josh Willis, and Cole Alexander.  Shakebone’s band mates come in the help out and Green Frequency provide a quick interview and three song set, before hastily taking off to their gig at The Wheel House.  As usually there are plenty of Tunes Around Town this coming week, Sully and Sharkbone tear threw the list.

“Grand Opening and a Wrong Reason”

Sully and Josh are joined by singer songwriter Joe Fletcher for an interview and five song  performance including  four from “White Lighter” due out in September, “Ambulances,” “Say What You Will,” as well as “Front Porch” and one from “Bury Your Problems,” “Sentimental Jury.”  Discussion of The Scene includes The Spot Underground‘s grand opening weekend featuring A*Live Fridays, where Spogga acts as a “Rockestra” conductor calling a myriad of musicians to the stage to interpret well know covers and a wealth of originals.  Saturday’s official Grand Opening, featuring Vudu Bevy, The Conduits, Route .44, APOGEE, The Shane Manzi Band, and SAUCE!  Fourth of July weekend audio fireworks are in full force with Providence overflowing with bands all weekend, culminating at Smith Hill’s Liberty Fest on Sunday.

CORRECTIONS: Since the podcast was recorded and released The Leah Carlson/Sauce show at Jerky’s has been moved to Firehouse 13 with Gravity Works headlining.  Also, I received notice that the Bristol show I mentioned are actually two shows, Sauce July 3rd at JR Beans, and Fungus Amungus July 4th, also at JR Beans. – Sully
